Laser peening is a cold treatment process by which a highly controlled laser pulse causes a plasma explosion near the surface of metal parts. The shock wave created by the pulse imparts compressive residual stress to the component, which protects against corrosion, cracking, and flaking due to causes such as foreign object damage, vibration, and stress corrosion cracking. The treated parts can achieve a useful life five to 10 times the duration of untreated parts, and significant improvements in life expectancy have been achieved over and above shot peening and other metal improvement processes. LSP Technologies is the only manufacturer of commercial grade laser peening systems for sale or lease, and it has several custom laser peening solutions now in development and manufacture. The company also has developed a patented Laser Bond Inspection process, which uses laser peening pulses to ascertain the strength and integrity of adhesive bonds used on composite materials.
