3M’s Energy and Advanced Materials Division utilizes their advanced technology, primarily in 7 major areas, to manufacture high performance ceramic and glass microspheres, ceramic fibers and textiles, fluoropolymers, fluorochemicals, and air filtration products. Key products include ceramic and glass microspheres that are used in consumer, industrial, and specialty paints and coatings, adhesives, spackles, caulks and putties, tape joint compounds, cosmetics and personal care products, and emulsion explosives. Ceramic fibers and textiles that are used by themselves as flame and heat shielding materials but also reinforcements for advanced metal and polymer composite materials for military and civilian aircraft, race car insulation, and advanced armor. High performance fluoropolymers which are widely used for the production of non-stick and temperature and chemical resistant coatings, seals, gaskets, hoses, films and many other specialized materials. Fluorochemicals which provide unique wetting and performance properties in demanding applications including paint and coating surfactants, mist suppressants, and flame retardants. Air filtration products, where 3M is a leader in high performance air filtration materials for home, automotive, and industrial applications. Oil and gas-focused products and technologies for exploration, production, refining, transportation, and clean-up applications are also produced. Solar and alternative energy products and technologies, including the leading backside film for commercial solar panels.
